One Wedding Photographer Vs. Two: Which is Best for Your Wedding

One of the questions we get asked all the time is: "Do we really need two photographers?" 📸

The short answer? Sometimes yes. Sometimes absolutely not!

After photographing over 1,000 weddings & events, we've seen incredible galleries created with one photographer, and we've also seen weddings where having a second photographer made a huge difference.

The right answer depends on your priorities, your timeline, and the kind of moments you don't want to miss.

📸 When One Photographer is Plenty

A single photographer can absolutely tell the story of your wedding…

If you're planning a smaller wedding, getting ready in the same location, or simply don't care about having every angle covered, one photographer is often more than enough.

One experienced photographer can capture:

  • Getting ready

  • The ceremony

  • Family photos

  • Couple portraits

  • Reception

  • Dancing

We focus on the necessities, with plenty of candid moments still being included. Many weddings are documented this way.

And then there’s another type of client who only needs one photographer…

Maybe having your photo taken just isn't your thing.

Maybe the idea of having cameras following you around all day makes you cringe. Maybe your dream wedding gallery is just one incredible photo to hang on the wall and a collection of memories you'll smile through every anniversary.

You're just not as into photography as some people are and that's completely okay.

One photographer is often the perfect fit for couples like you. It’s low-key and unfussy.

👯When a Second Photographer Makes a Big Difference

There are a few situations where adding a second photographer provides real value…not because one photographer isn't capable, but because two people simply can't be in the same place at once.

Sometimes it isn't even about getting more photos. It's about making the day run more smoothly.

You're getting ready separately.

This is probably the biggest reason couples choose two photographers.

Instead of one photographer rushing between locations, or having to choose between one person’s preps of the other, each partner gets full coverage of their morning.

You'll have moments from both sides of the day rather than only seeing half the story. For some families, coverage during this part of the day is something they are really looking forward to.

You have a large guest list or guests traveling from all over.

At a 200+ person wedding, there are constantly moments happening…

Grandma crying. Your college friends laughing.
Your cousins who flew in from across the country. Little kids dancing. Parents hugging.

Two photographers increase the number of moments that get captured. 🥹

You LOVE candid photos.

A second photographer usually isn't standing beside the lead photographer taking the exact same picture…they're looking somewhere completely different.

While one photographer captures your walk down the aisle, the second might be photographing those quiet moments behind the doors with your dad before he walks you in.

While you're finishing family photos during cocktail hour, the second photographer is already out there documenting your guests laughing, hugging, and enjoying the celebration.

And more. Those candids often become some of our couples' favorite photographs. While one photographer still gets plenty of candids, the second can really be locked in actively searching for those moments through the day while the lead photographer captures the main stuff.

Your timeline is tight.

Wedding days move fast, and sometimes they move really fast. ⏰

A tight timeline, a large family, multiple locations, a wedding party of 18... suddenly everyone is making decisions in real time.

Having a second photographer isn't just about getting more photos…it's about having another experienced brain in the room.

We're constantly checking in with each other, adjusting the plan, solving little problems before they become big ones, and making sure nothing falls through the cracks.

Sometimes one of us is actively taking photos while the other is tracking down Grandma for family portraits. Sometimes one of us is photographing the bride getting dressed 15 minutes behind while the other picks up the slack and gets ahead on groomsmen photos while they wait.

It's teamwork, and it allows us to move quickly without making your day feel rushed.

You have a big family or wedding party.

Large family photo lists take time.

A second photographer can help organize people, gather the next group, and keep portraits moving efficiently so you're spending less time waiting and more time enjoying your wedding.

What Doesn't Require Two Photographers?

Not every wedding benefits equally.

  • you're having an intimate wedding

  • you're getting ready together

  • you have a relaxed timeline, less locations

  • you have a smaller family, bridal party & guest count

  • or you’re just not super into pictures and would simply rather invest that money elsewhere

one experienced photographer may honestly be the better choice.

There's turly no "correct" answer.

Our Philosophy

We never recommend a second photographer simply because it's an upgrade, we recommend one when we genuinely think it'll improve your experience!! 😊

There’s been many times where we'll tell couples to save the money.

But there’s plenty of other times we'll tell them it's one of the best investments they can make!!

Every wedding is different, and we'd rather help you make the right decision than sell you something you don't need.

If you're unsure what makes sense for your wedding, we're always happy to talk it through and tell you exactly what we'd recommend!

You can always send us an email to hello@lovestruckpictures.com if you have any specific questions you want to talk through!!
